Sing with more ease!
By Tim Russell
Here's a quick vocal tip for creating MORE EASE in your sound by freeing the throat. STEP 1. Drop your head back as far as it can go, without using your shoulders, so that your nose points to the ceiling.
STEP 2. Breathe in and let out a HAA through a relaxed mouth. Note the sensation in your throat and that there is no interruption in your breath.
STEP 3. Bring your head forward using only your back-of-neck muscles and allow out another sighed HAA. Aim to keep the same sensation in your throat.
STEP 4. Toggle between these two positions of head back and forward until you maintain freedom in the throat in BOTH conditions.
WHY DO THIS, MAN?
This can be used in vocalizing as a way to find opening in your vocal tract. With your head back, it's nearly impossible to use your throat to support the sound -- you are relying exclusively on your breath. Also with your head back there is a direct channel for the air to exit from your diaphragm, and no corners to turn!
With the head forward, you will feel a more pronounced sense of vibration on the roof of your mouth - this means you're doing it correctly!
Happy singing :)
