Loosen up, tongue!
By Tim Russell
Tongue tension can be a singers nightmare and sometimes steal your free and beautiful tone.
To check for root tongue tension, put your thumb underneath your jaw and slide it back toward your neck while taking a silent breath. Now choose an easy vowel and glide through your range from low to high. If you feel the fleshy spot going hard then you need to release some tongue tension!
Here's a couple tips on how to FREE TONGUE TENSION:
1. Place the tip of your tongue behind your bottom front teeth and allow the mid-tongue to roll over. Repeat several times on the daily.
2. Use NG's in your warm ups on easy scales, as it lifts the back of the tongue.
3. Say the word "GLUG" often and incorporate it into your vocalises.
